Yoga Week Comes to the Area
By Marilyn Campbell/The Connection

Picture
Freddy Margolis of Village Yoga in Potomac, Md., plans to join Yoga on the Mall.  He also hopes D.C. Yoga week will unite local yogis.

"The D.C. area has one of the strongest yoga communities in the country,” he said. “People get worried about their own studios, but it’s nice for us all to come together and have a nice day out on the Mall.”

The Yoga Generation:  Yoga credited with relieving stress, boosting  self-esteem and improving grades in children.
By Marilyn Campbell/The Connection

Yoga classes for middle and high school students incorporate exercises that deal with issues like peer pressure and body image. "We use warrior pose, for example, where kids come into the pose with their arms stretched up to the ceiling or out to their sides, and we say 'Feel how strong you are,'" said Annie  Moyer of Sun and Moon Yoga Studio in Arlington. "It is a gesture of opening  oneself up to the world and creates the feeling of real confidence."

Instructors say it's good exercise. "It helps them to get physically fit," said Freddy Margolis of Village Yoga in Potomac.

Back Pain Back? By Be Well World Staff

Picture
Yoga ensures that the movement between all joints in the body is aligned.  Done properly, a yoga student can experience a significant reduction in back pain as well as an increase in overall mobility. Finding the yoga poses appropriate for your specific back pain is essential, and a yoga instructor can help you achieve the proper postures if you talk to them about your pain. Most recommended poses increase core strength, while simultaneously stretching and lengthening the neck, spine, abdominals, and side waist. Examples of recommended poses that ease back pain include downward-facing dog, forward fold, child’s pose, and pigeon. Relief also can be found by lying in the Savasana position with a block under the lower back and legs bent, feet flat on the floor.  - Freddy Margolis, Village Yoga, Potomac, MD

Yoga Studio Celebrates Its First Anniversary.
Autism Speaks to benefit.
By Colleen Healy, Potomac Almanac, September 1, 2011

Picture
One year is hardly old in the 5,000-year history of yoga; however, it is a milestone for Freddy Margolis who celebrates the first anniversary of Village Yoga, his Potomac yoga studio. As part of the celebration, a portion of the anniversary proceeds will go to the studio’s community partner, Autism Speaks.

At the one-year mark, Margolis has a thriving business that accomplishes his aim to make the practice of yoga physically, mentally and spiritually accessible to all.

"There are different routes to pursue spirituality. You can find your spirituality in yoga," he said. "We have tried to build a good strong community of people. We have a range of people in our classes and make room for everybody to have their own successful time. We help each other and support and encourage each other to succeed in yoga and have agood day.  The main thing is for you to have fun."   (read more here....)

Freddy Margolis’ Foray Into Yoga a ‘Life Change’
By Kathleen Bryan, Potomac Patch - Neighborhood Files, August 29, 2011

Picture
Freddy Margolis’ journey from a successful builder to a yogi with an entrepreneurial spirit was a stroke of serendipity.

A self-described Type-A personality, Margolis, of Potomac, pursued yoga at the suggestion of a friend—initially for weight loss and to ease his stress from a demanding job. At more than 200 pounds, the Churchill grad and former star athlete focused his physical fitness regimen on powerlifting and running. But he couldn’t lose weight, he said.

Margolis soon discovered the merits—including shedding pounds—of a tradition dating back some 5,000 years. And he found refuge in its ability to teach practitioners the art of balancing mind, body and spirit.

“I haven’t touched a weight in five or six years. Yoga takes your body to its natural state,” Margolis said. [Yoga] works different parts of the body.  Wherever you bring the intention—energetics.”  (read more here....)
